    It transmits digital information via analog systems and function to modulate an analog carrier signal to carry digital information and demodulate a similar signal to decode the digital information from the analog carrier signal.

    Types of Modems

    1.External Modem - it's a standalone modem that does not have a router. It is rarely attached directly to a computer via USB, ethernet or at times Wi-Fi. Usually, it is attached to a separate router so you can share connection with multiple network nodes near your home or office.

    2.Router/Modem Combo - this type of modem contained within a router that allows multiple computer or devices to connect within single network. It is commonly used today, and networks don't need a separate modem and router. 

    3.Integrated Modem - it is a modem contained within a computer mostly USB or as PCI card. This isn't used anymore since it can only allow one computer to get access to the internet.

    4.Cable, DSL, Fiber, Dial-up Modems - routers can be categorized based on type of service you use to connect to the internet. Most common are cables and DSL and some uses fiber optic access which really has fast speed. 

    Choosing a Modem

    1. You must check compatibility with your internet service provider

    4.You need to know about cable modems

    5.You need to know about DSL modems

    oNot all DSL internet are the same, so you have to check your internet provider to know the generation it uses. Some DSL technology uses different generations such as:

    ADSL - up to 8mbps download and 500 kbps upload speed
    ADSL2+ - up to 24mbps download and 1.4mbps upload speed
    VDSL 2 - up to 50mbps download and 15mbps upload speed
    GPON - up to 2.4gbps download and 1.2 upload speed

    c.Cost - it is quite expensive; however, the price varies depending on the router's battery capacity and most modems now are offered thru flexible internet plans 

    d.Automatic Dialing - it can do automatic dialing that can accept commands from other computers for communication purposes

    e.Fax Compatibility - some modems are compatible with fax that can be instantly send and receive using modems.

    Businesses would need a modem so they can have a reliable speed of internet connection useful for their day-to-day operations.
