DSL (digital subscriber line) is a type of technology that connects you to the internet over a telephone network. Nextelle’s DSL gives you a dedicated internet access line from our central office to your home that’s all yours.
Naked DSL is a product that seeks to overcome people’s distaste for having a landline connection, by conditioning the line to only carry a data signal, without an accompanying phone signal.
This means…not as much as people think. It’s mostly a regulatory thing. It means that Telstra is required to provide a certain amount of telephone line capacity for ‘Unbundled” access to the telephone line network. This means you will get broadband, but no voice service.
But this doesn’t get rid of ‘line rental’ the way most people expect it does. After all, line rental pays for exactly that – renting the physical copper line for services. The voice service is included because it has to be, not because that’s what your money is paying for.
So when Naked DSL eliminates the voice service, it doesn’t eliminate the line rental cost – but it means that it can be classified differently and hidden from the customer.
Some people actually think this is a good deal.
